For me Art has been the secret joy of my life, it has helped me survive and flourish in this every changing world. Art has been my escape and my challenge. I never hope to achieve mastery, and I love to keep on learning and building on what I know.
Perhaps you’ve decided you really want to get going on your art journey. That is so exciting–and so much fun!
I use the term “journey” because it feels like a winding road when the destination is unclear. There are many starts and stops along the way, and it helps to have a companion or several along with you. The journey also involves exploration—not only without, but within. There are road blocks you did not see coming, hurdles to jump over and it won’t hurt to have a mighty dose of perseverance when your way forward seems uncertain.
Where do you want to start? What will you use? and How will you do it?
There are loads of courses and videos to watch to learn techniques, but sometimes I think it is a good idea on a new endeavor to get informed on the basics–the abslolute basics of materials, skills and concepts so the vocabulary of art will make sense to you. Once you have the basics, you can make choices and where you might begin to focus your energy in developing confidence as an artist.
That is why I want to share basic art knowledge, values and concepts with anyone who wants to get started on a wonderful journey. I plan to teach about exactly what you need to get started with water colors, acrylics, mixed media and oil painting. My goal is to give you the information you need so you can get started as quickly as possible!
Even if you are not an absolute beginner, there may be some mediums that look interesting, but you’re not sure about the materials or some of the techniques. That’s OK. One of my favorite art professors always talked about having “Beginner’s Mind.” That has served me well on my own art journey. Invariably, I have learned from others little tricks and big concepts even if I have been doing art for years.
Some considerations...
What medium seems best suited to your personality?
How much time do have to devote to learning?
What sort of budget are you alotting for materials?
What is the size of the area for your creative space?
What kind of art do you like?
What kind of art makes you feel like creating? Realistic? Abstract? Interiors?Portraits? Wild waves? Stormy skies?
Do you like large bold paintings? Small intimate work? Colorful? Muted?
Smooth rounded shapes? Rough textured areas?
How do you work?
Are you methodical and orderly? Value preparation? Are you patient?
Do you dive right in and just want to experiment?
Are you someone who can do a little of both?
Do you like experimenting just to see what happens? Are concerned with results? Or are you more in love with process?
